Information: Objective or subjective/situational?
نویسنده
چکیده
objective and subjective ways of understanding information corresponds to the conflict between an understanding of information as a thing or a substance versus an understanding of it as a sign. It is a fundamental distinction that involves a whole theory of knowledge, and it has roots back to different metaphors applied in Shannon's information theory. It is argued that a subject-dependent/ situation specific understanding of information is best suited to fulfill the needs in information science and that it is urgent for us to base Information Science (IS; or Library and Information Science, LIS) on this alternative theoretical frame. It is said that we live in an Age of Information, but it is an open scandal that there is no theory, nor even definition, of information that is both broad and precise enough to make such an assertion meaningful. Human-in-the-Loop Situational Understanding via Subjective Bayesian Networks∗
In this paper we present a methodology to exploit human-machine coalitions for situational understanding. Situational understanding refers to the ability to relate relevant information and form logical conclusions, as well as identifying gaps in information. This process requires the ability to reason inductively, for which we will exploit the machines’ ability to ‘learn’ from data. However, im...
متن کاملSituational similarity and behavioral consistency : Subjective , objective , variable - centered , and person - centered approaches q
Personality psychology has long recognized the importance of situations for determining behavior, but little research has directly examined the degree to which the cross-situational consistency of behavior is associated with the similarity of situations. In two studies, participants (n1⁄4 138 & 116) engaged in several dyadic interactions, and their behavior was coded from a videotaped record. B...
متن کاملSignaling threat: how situational cues affect women in math, science, and engineering settings.
This study examined the cues hypothesis, which holds that situational cues, such as a setting's features and organization, can make potential targets vulnerable to social identity threat. Objective and subjective measures of identity threat were collected from male and female math, science, and engineering (MSE) majors who watched an MSE conference video depicting either an unbalanced ratio of ...
متن کاملChildren's developing notions of (im)partiality.
This research examines the development of children's understanding that people's judgments may be skewed by relationships, and that situational factors may make it difficult to be impartial. One hundred and seventy-one adults and children between kindergarten and eighth grade heard stories about judges in contests with objective or subjective criteria for winning. In Experiment 1, by fourth gra...
متن کاملHelmet Mounted Displays for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Control
An experiment was performed to assess the effect of using a Helmet Mounted Display (HMD) versus a conventional computer monitor and joystick to perform an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) sensor operator target search task. Eight subjects were evaluated on objective performance measures including their target detection accuracy and responses, in addition to subjective measures including workload, ...
